Description
Summary:This case study describes our approach to understand the cognitive processes of health care providers while they participate in the resuscitation of babies at birth. A better understanding of clinical decision making during this procedure may inform future efforts to optimize the physical and social environment in which it occurs. Using mobile eye-tracking glasses, we were able to record the visual and audio experience of health care providers as they perform newborn resuscitations. These recordings were played back to health care providers to prompt verbal recall in the form of a Think Aloud Protocol and a semi-structured interview. With this method, we are able to elicit the complex cognitive processes and strategic behaviors of health care providers in an applied setting. We provide a candid overview of protocol development, technical considerations, and lessons learned during our experience implementing this project. We also address many of the challenges we faced in conducting this project including those unique to the study of health care providers in a clinical setting. We believe that the approach outlined in this case can be adapted and applied to a wide variety of research objectives.
