| Summary: | This case study describes a program of research focused on an intervention using cognitive training and neuromodulation. Within the context of this intervention, we address (1) the importance of generalization of improvements and relatedly (2) the need for assessments that tap into many domains of cognition to understand these improvements. We highlight possible methodological barriers impacting the ability to interpret the outcomes of these interventions: (1) design of the control group, (2) degree of blinding, (3) dosage of an intervention, (4) technological advancements, (5) participant engagement, and (6) payment designs. We discuss how intervention with cognitive training and neuromodulation may yield an improvement that extends to untrained domains of cognition. Finally, we conclude that the resolution of the methodological barriers above can strengthen causal inference. |
