Summary:Hermeneutics, in its most general sense, is concerned with interpretation. As a distinct theory of interpretation, hermeneutics has a long and rich history. In its development, it has shifted, focused, and broadened in scope. For the purposes of this entry, hermeneutics has come to signify the following: first, a methodology focusing on interpretation; second, a branch of philosophy concerned with understanding; third, an examination of how individuals' history, culture, and language shape their interpretation and being in the world; and fourth, a human practice engaged with making sense of and understanding everyday life and situations. Understanding the development of hermeneutics brings these different positions into focus, explicating its reach and wide-ranging contributions.
