For the purposes of this entry, hermeneutics has come to signify the following: first, a methodology focusing on interpretation; second, a branch of philosophy concerned with understanding; third, an examination of how individuals' history, culture, and language shape their interpretation and being in the world; and fourth, a human practice engaged with making sense of and understanding everyday life and situations.
