Description
Summary:Roger David Abrahams (1933-2017) was an internationally recognized folklore scholar whose contributions to the field were significant, particularly with regard to his studies on African folklore and how that was adopted into African American culture in the United States in the 20th century. This entry provides a brief biographical and career sketch of Abrahams before becoming fully immersed in his study of how African orality became a part of African American cultures in the United States, especially looking at his hometown of Philadelphia, PA. Within that area of research, this entry especially investigates his contributions to the study of what can be viewed as the three types of Men-of-Words: the dozens player, the toast reciter, and the orators.
