Summary:To account for the many aspects of transcription, this entry offers the following definition: Transcription is the situated, theoretical, and ethical act of materializing spoken research events (e.g., interviews, focus groups, and other events that are subsequently transcribed) into written text. In qualitative research, data generally comprise spoken research events (e.g., interviews and focus groups) that are transcribed into written text. For example, interviews, a mainstay of qualitative research data collection, are recorded using a recording device while field notes are taken during the interview. Interviews are subsequently transcribed from the recording, usually by the researcher, members of the research team, a professional service, or computer software.
