Summary:David Reuben Jerome Heise (b. 1937) is an American social psychologist. He is the founder and primary developer of affect control theory (ACT). Unlike previous theories of social interaction, which were built on the importance of cognition, ACT highlights the role that affect plays in shaping human social behavior. In addition to his many theoretical contributions to the study of interpersonal behavior, identity processes, and emotion, Heise has contributed to the range of qualitative and quantitative methodological tools within sociology and affective computing. Although retired from teaching, Heise remains the Rudy Professor of Sociology Emeritus at Indiana University.
