The publication of Edward W. Said's Orientalism, in 1978, inaugurated the field even if the intention of the book had not been to do so. The themes and ideas of postcolonialism developed and consolidated around the writings of three key scholarsEdward W. Said (1978), Homi K. Bhabha (1994), and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (1988)and, perhaps more significantly, through the intellectual engagement with these ideas by other scholars (see Loomba, 2005 [1998]).
