|a The Polish physician, microbiologist, and public health expert Ludwik Fleck (1896-1961) is considered a pioneer of the sociological approach to the study of scientific knowledge. The rediscovery, in the 1970s, of his main theoretical study, Genesis and Development of a Scientific Fact, from 1935 (Fleck, 1979/1935), leads to a wave of interest in Fleck's thought. Although Fleck was initially presented by some scholars as a "precursor" of Thomas Kuhn, today his theoretical approach is perceived as an original conceptual contribution, very different from that of Kuhn. This entry provides a biographical sketch of Ludwik's life, followed by an examination of his practice-grounded view of science and his thought collectives.
