Summary:The American anthropologist Paul Stoller (1947-) has been one of the leading figures of the discipline since the 1980s. His works include more than 14 books, numerous articles in prestigious journals, and works of fiction. He is, perhaps, known mainly for the controversial methodology he applied in his fieldwork in the 1970s and 1980s, when he decided to become initiated into the secrets or Songhay sorcery in Niger. Influenced by the postmodern movement in American anthropology in the 1980s, led by figures such as James Clifford, Paul Rabinow, George Marcus, and Eric Fischer, Stoller made of ethnographic writing a powerful tool for anthropological innovation.
