Mills's best known and most influential work, The Sociological Imagination (1959), was selected by the International Sociology Association as the second most influential book of the 20th century. While Mills predated the advent of postmodernism in sociology, some commentators have pointed out that some of the ideas forwarded in The Sociological Imagination foreshadow the postmodern turn in sociology by several decades (Burawoy, 2008; Kerr, 2009).
