| Summary: | The main objective of this case study is to acquaint the reader with the challenges of conducting cross-cultural research. The vehicle is a study I conducted that examined variability in obesity and being overweight among a sample of Brazilian adolescents. As this was my first time working with an emerging-nation sample, there were conceptual and methodological adjustments I made. These adjustments concerned the operationalization (i.e., construction) of key variables in the study, including race and socioeconomic status. Besides detailing these adjustments, I also discuss how a foundational concept I had used in my previous research in this area was not applicable with my emerging-nation sample. I discuss the construction of a literature review, which included non-English-language studies as well as communication challenges I faced in my collaboration with non-native English-speaking colleagues. The need for flexibility and openness is real. My goal is that the reader gains a deeper understanding of the conceptual and methodological issues involved in conducting research on these population groups. |
