| Summary: | A vignette is a short descriptor of a person, object, or situation that represents a cluster of key characteristics that can be explored and tested with the study participant. Vignette-based interviewing is a robust method used to explore beliefs, attitudes, and/or judgments, and why decisions are made in relation to particular situations. Within the vignette-based interviewing process, the vignette is the structure upon which data are collected and therefore the design and development of the vignette/s is the most important step in the vignette-based interviewing preparatory phase of such studies. This case study explores the importance of the vignette design and development phase and provides a step-by-step guide on how to design, develop, and validate vignettes prior to their usage in the field. |
