Description
Summary:Young adulthood (aged 18-24) is an important period in people's lives and it is when many health behaviors are established. Young adults experience high levels of stress and anxiety, and mind-body therapies (MBT) can be useful in management of those conditions. The current study examined prevalence and patterns of MBT in young adults in the United States using data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). The strengths and weaknesses of using the NHIS to investigate MBT are explored and discussed. Two strengths are that findings are generalizable to the national population of young adults and the NHIS includes very comprehensive information on MBT. Potential weaknesses include the cross-sectional design of NHIS and the limitations of using secondary (existing) data. We present some of the basics of survey research, highlighting issues of generalizability and bias, and distinguish secondary and primary data. We also discuss ethical issues when conducting this type of research. Although conducting survey research can be complex, requiring advanced training, however, basic survey research techniques can be applied to smaller scale studies and we provide one example of such a study for the student to review.
