| Summary: | The present case study explores the experience of, and unanticipated challenges encountered in, recruiting both temporary and non-temporary health care assistant staff from inpatient mental health wards in the United Kingdom. Barriers to recruitment included health care assistant staff having many demands while at work, not having regular or reliable access to a computer, and being required to be in almost constant contact with patients whom they support. The main challenge was working with a population whose temporary employment situation was itself in part the focus of the study. Data collected via cross-sectional survey methodology were most effectively accomplished by approaching staff directly in the workplace. The researcher adopted a pragmatic and multifaceted approach to recruit participants (no money changed hands), but which in essence meant taking a more immersive approach to data collection, with direct involvement in ward-based duties. The importance of flexibility, familiarity with ward etiquette, patience, and sustained effort to develop trusting relationships with employees is discussed. |
