Description
Summary:There are many challenges in researching migrants, especially those coming from authoritarian settings such as Iran. Researching sensitive subject matters such as human rights only adds to these challenges. As part of a larger study, recent Iranian migrants to the United Kingdom (London, Leeds, Birmingham) and Canada (Toronto) were targeted to determine what they know of human rights and their understanding of the way human rights are portrayed in the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting news programs. The participants comprised of any type of migrant, be it political dissidents, economic migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. They were randomly selected through nonprobability sampling. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Questionnaires were administered to 101 participants residing in the United Kingdom or Canada. Out of the 101 participants, 22 were also interviewed, face-to-face. There were many ethical and methodological challenges associated with this research, but here I will only focus on the following ethical issues: fear and lack of trust. The Islamic Republic has been likened to a Stalinist society where every level of life and association is permeated by the state. It is this atmosphere whence these participants came from. Overcoming ethical dilemmas of gaining trust without jeopardizing the well-being of the participants was one of the main challenges of carrying out this research. Using snowballing and third parties were a few ways of overcoming these challenges.
