| Summary: | This study took place in 2013. I was a doctoral student completing the requirements for my dissertation. This study was conceptualized from the disproportionate number of African-American children living in poverty who were in need of mental health services. In an effort to understand the lack of mental health utilization among children, African-American single mothers process for seeking treatment for their children were the focus of this study. This case study outlines my process for conducting a grounded theory study and generating a help-seeking theory that was constructed through the experiences of African-American single mothers living in poverty who accessed mental health treatment for their children. This case highlights the theoretical sampling procedures I utilized to recruit a total of 11 mothers, the data collection methods employed through the use of semi-structured interviews and ecological maps (ecomaps), and the data analysis process through the use of open, axial, and selective coding procedures. In addition to grounded theory methodology, this case study captures my experiences and lessons learned from employing grounded theory methods. |
