Summary:	This research methods case study walks the researcher through a number of steps the author took in utilizing critical discourse analysis to investigate the role humanitarianism can play in shaping the character of war. Critical discourse analysis was useful because of the decision to tackle this topic by examining humanitarian discourse in the justification of major policy decisions that shape war. This move from a broad subject of interest to a discourse operative within it speaks to the way that, as the first section explains, critical discourse analysis may be particularly attractive to scholars who determine that discourse might be important to their research question, but who do not subscribe to the full set of assumptions underlying the dominant approach to discourse analysis, poststructuralist Discourse Theory. For unlike Discourse Theory, critical discourse analysis sees discourse as something that the researcher should attempt to put into causal relation with other aspects of the social world. Subsequent sections highlight some crucial differences critical discourse analysis can make in three stages of research: (1) developing a research design, (2) the collection, organization, and interpretation of data, and (3) writing the final analysis.
