| Summary: | This case study is about an ethnographic research project examining multiple, overlapping social groups in a winter resort town. I discuss the challenges and the benefits of conducting observations among coexisting social groups sharing a space. The project this discussion is based on is an ethnographic study of social relations in a ski town, examining how different groups of people use different definitions of "nature" to establish their own deservingness to inhabit the area. I spent time talking to, working with, and socializing with members of three groups: long-term locals, recently relocated "ski bums," and temporary vacationers. It was difficult to establish trust and confidence among these overlapping groups and to record observations of interactions between them that addressed both sides' interpretations. The major benefit was my ability to see both the impressions each group had of one another shared in private conversations and the way these impressions played out in interactions between groups. |
