| Summary: | Precarious Inclusion: Studying Ontarian 2SLGBTQI+ Parents' Experiences Childrearing in a Post-legal Parity Framework comprised a qualitative, community-engaged research creation project that aimed to better understand what life is like for 2SLGBTQI+ parents after achieving equal legal parenting rights in Ontario, Canada with the All Families Are Equal Act (2016). We describe practical, ethical, and political considerations that shaped our study design and implementation; and we identify challenges encountered while conducting Precarious Inclusion. For example, we found that emergency responses to the COVID-19 pandemic that necessitated that we redesign our study actually produced more robust, diverse, and comprehensive results. Our case study introduces readers to identifying and adapting research methods that conscientiously respond to continued histories of power and oppression when conducting research with equity seeking groups, such as the 2SLGBTQI+ community. Readers also learn the importance of adopting an intersectionality framework at all stages of research and leave with specific tools and practices to incorporate this framework in their research. Lastly, we describe the generative data creation/dissemination potentialities of incorporating research creation methods into community engaged research, thus providing insight into the benefits of including arts- and praxis-based methods in research. |
