Description
Summary:In what ways have we been colonized during our academic training as qualitative researchers? What kind of inner process do we need to embark on actually becoming aware of the ways we have been intellectually colonized? What does this look like? What consequences does this have for us as well as for the communities and populations we work with? To answer these questions, this how-to guide includes my reflections as a qualitative researcher of Mexican origin (born, raised, and educated through college in Monterrey, Nuevo León) who engages in a process of critical reflexivity from my positionality as a Mexican immigrant academically trained in California. I offer the life-changing lessons I unexpectedly learned while conducting research with populations of Mexican origin in Los Angeles and later in four urban centers in Mexico (Ciudad Juárez, Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey). Through this lifelong exercise of academic self-honesty, is it possible to decolonize oneself completely? I do not have the answer yet, but I encourage readers to accompany me as I reflect on these life lessons, I hope these lessons will be of benefit to you as you undertake your own inner journey of intellectual self-discovery.
