| Summary: | In this case study, we create a communicative methodology that uses speculative fiction as a rehearsal for decolonization. Speculative fiction is a term for fiction that bends and breaks the expectations of reality, such as science fiction, fantasy, surrealism, and horror. As this methodology requires two steps-analyzing and creating speculative fiction-we draw from two research projects, in order to exemplify each step. First, we use Liahnna's dissertation, "An Indigenous Rhetorical Praxis of Futurity: Indigeneity, Spatiality, and Relationality in Speculative Fiction Literature" (Stanley, 2023) to demonstrate how to examine speculative fiction in order to draw forth ways to practice emplacing decolonial structures. Second, we examine Jenna's short story, "The Dream Trainers," as an exemplar of how to use such insights to create decolonial worlds in speculative fiction. We explain how to use speculative fiction to open imaginative possibilities and why that is important for communication researchers. We also reflect on challenges throughout the process, such as how to rehearse decolonization with and on behalf of communities of which we are not a direct part, leaning into the potential in rehearsal for iterative learning and the possibility to reflect on mistakes before trying again. Readers will learn how to analyze and write speculative fiction that takes their own expertise and utilizes it to write decolonial futures into being through a continual methodological process of rehearsal. |
