Caribbean decolonial methods are about reimagining and reconstructing the Caribbean's past, present, and future through a lens that centers the region's histories, cultures, and perspectives. It is an ongoing project of liberation, seeking not only to understand the impacts of colonialism but to actively work toward a more equitable and self-determined Caribbean. While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to decolonial work, this guide is grounded in a Caribbean onto-epistemological framing and methodology of liming. The guide highlights strategies for how to conduct decolonizing research online and face-to-face. We address key concepts in decolonizing research, including interrogation of self, respecting indigenous Caribbean knowledge, Caribbean ways of knowing, sharing power with participants as co-researchers, building trust in an online space, acting on reciprocity, and disrupting the Eurocentric approach to the research process. Additionally, we discuss how to approach positionality statements from a decolonizing lens. The guide concludes with ethical considerations when using a decolonial approach for Caribbean-based research. |
