In doing so it has the potential to democratize the production of knowledge. In this case study, we focus on how action research enables deep insights into the collective experience of preparing for, responding to, and recovery from disasters. Unlike traditional research methods, action research does not aim to measure or evaluate "resilience" but to understand the community processes and practices that enable communities to thrive despite the challenges of a changing climate. This case study reflects on the practice of action research in the context of complexity, distress, and political struggle. The authors have been practicing action research for well over a decade, refining our approach, experimenting with new data collection processes and innovating in the translation of research findings. In the process we have become convinced of the value of action research to support collective action and social change. Action research enables academic researchers to interrogate their theoretical knowledge "in real life." For community partners, action research demands that time is allocated to reflecting on actions. Allocating time for reflection, although not always prioritized in community life, is often recognized as valuable in sustaining collective action, building understanding, and affirming the often-overlooked work of communities. Action research is not without challenges and in this case study we explore issues of complex and emergent research design; assumptions about what, how, and who does "research"; and a generalized lack of understanding of action research methodology.
