Description
Summary:Research in solitary confinement units is in some ways unique and simultaneously no different from research in any other context involving human participants. Our research in solitary confinement units provided an opportunity to develop and implement strategies that maximized our ethical and moral commitments to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion while simultaneously producing the best research outcomes possible. These strategies, which focus on building and sustaining a diverse and equitable research team, can and should be duplicated whenever researchers are building their own research teams regardless of the population they plan to study or the location of their research. The case study begins by defining the key concepts-diversity, equity, and inclusion. Next, we explore each concept in depth as it relates to research teams with illustrations from our own research. Finally, we provide examples of the ways in which attentiveness to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion produces the most rigorous and pathbreaking research. After completing this case, the reader will understand the importance of incorporating the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion into research that involves human participants and will be able to apply these principles to research examples beyond that explored in this case study.
