Description
Summary:This case study is a reflexive discussion of the contributions and potential threats that a combination of intervention-oriented ethnography and empowerment-oriented feminist perspectives introduce when researching subaltern groups. The examination is based on my original research exploring the lived experiences of rural-urban migrant factory women on their return to China's hinterland. In this case study, I first present the rationale for adopting intervention-oriented ethnography, the empowerment-oriented feminist perspective, and intersectional reflexivity. Then I reflect on my practices of using a top-down strategy while incorporating the bottom-up strategy as a hidden method as well as self-exposure in implementing the methodologic rationales. After that, I share three challenges I encountered, namely how to approach "true" data, the dilemma of being a participant observer, and deconstructing and reconstructing my feminist perspective. I include rich examples in that section to discuss how I dealt with those problems and the lessons I learned. It was intersectional reflexivity that made these problems visible, analyzable, and at least partially addressable. By linking my original empirical study critically with a theoretical discussion on reflexive feminist ethnography, this case study helps ethnographers learn about the advantages and potential threats of intervention-oriented ethnography as well as the possibility and complexity of feminist methodologies. Readers also learn about the rationale and practical application of intersectional reflexivity and how it refines the feminist ethnography.
