Description
Summary:Reflexivity is currently a critical component of qualitative research. While this was not always so, for today's researchers, reflexive practice is one of several criteria for ethical and rigorous research that enhances the trustworthiness of the data and findings. A multitude of methods exists to encourage reflexive practice. To do so successfully, researchers must see reflexivity as a continuous process rather than a single step in a research study. In this how-to guide, we briefly discuss the concept of reflexivity. We examine the importance of reflexive practice when working with diverse participant populations, sharing examples from our research projects. We offer three suggestions or techniques for reflexive practice pulled from our pedagogic toolkits. We finish with a discussion of how reflexive practice leads to more ethical and rigorous qualitative research.
