Description
Summary:Conducting research within the context of disability has a multitude of aspects to consider, such as language usage, inclusion, and universal design within the creation of the research. The purpose of the phenomenological study used as context for this case study was to understand the lived experiences of college athletes with learning disabilities and/or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder at National Collegiate Athletic Association Division 1 institutions, giving voice to the untold stories and commonalities among this population. More specially, the research examined individuals' experiences through disability disclosure, self-advocacy, and academic support. This case study will first discuss the importance of language and learning about various disability frameworks at the beginning stages of the research process for researchers to reflect on their own positionality within their own research. Next, the concept of universal design is introduced, and examples of how it was implemented into the research design are provided. Finally, this case study explores how to honor individualism within the context of finding commonalities within a phenomenon and explores the rewarding and challenging aspects to conducting research with and alongside those with various impairments or disabling environments.
