| Summary: | This case study draws on our research project rooted in life history interviews with women employed in the informal sector in India during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research was based on 35 in-depth semistructured interviews with women employed in India's informal sector inspired by the life history method. In the interview process, we paid close attention to the nature of the participants' narratives and analyzed how these shaped their professional and personal identities. The story-telling approach thus enabled us to capture the precarities these women experienced in everyday life as their preexisting vulnerabilities rooted in their caste, class, and gender identities intersected with the specific health challenges created by the COVID-19 health crisis. This case study discusses our research process, the practicalities of applying a life history methodology to data analysis, the benefits of such an approach, and some practical challenges we faced in the process. As a pedagogic tool, this case study will help researchers and students carry out research projects rooted in gender economics and intersectionality frameworks, choose appropriate research methods, recognize challenges, and develop creative solutions as they move through the research process. |
