| Summary: | Although Canada continues to attempt to address homophobia and cisheteronormativity, 2S/LGBTQ+ Canadians still experience oppression, marginalization, unsafe spaces, isolation, trauma, and invisibility. All this leads to higher levels of anxiety, depression, and suicidality. Compassion and pain are intertwined and are fundamental to the human experience, so compassion has been recognized by many 2S/LGBTQ+ people as a critical component of their happiness and well-being.This study aims to understand through personal narratives how experiences of compassion shape the lives of 2S/LGBTQ+ people that goes beyond individual resiliency and self-compassion to include social aspects of compassion. This study was guided by poststructuralism and queer theory. Twenty semistructured interviews were conducted and analyzed through Foucauldian discourse analysis, which helped us to understand how compassion is socially constructed through language and meaning. In this case study, we explore how we translated our qualitative interview data about compassion in 2S/LGBTQ+ communities into comic stories for engaging knowledge mobilization. Using discourse analysis and collaborative practices with artists in multiple countries, we provide details on balancing data with artistic freedom. |
