Description
Summary:In order to better understand barriers and desired solutions to mental health care by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), we conducted a landscape analysis of a rural Western state using participatory research practices. The study, cocreated with stakeholders from the I/DD community, sought to better understand the lived experiences of individuals facing these barriers and to help identify solutions that would be meaningful for individuals with I/DD. The current case study highlights benefits and challenges of cocreating and conducting a study with a participatory action research advisory board (PARAB; a group of individuals with lived experience with I/DD). This case study will also describe some of the benefits and challenges of a mixed methods approach. Specifically, we employed an embedded mixed methods design and collected data from multiple stakeholders in the I/DD community (i.e., individuals with I/DD, family members and caregivers of individuals with I/DD, disability support providers, and mental health providers) in order to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of both the barriers to care individuals with I/DD experience and their desired solutions to these barriers. Finally, the case study will delve into various challenges in recruiting adults with I/DD to complete online surveys and explore possible solutions to these challenges.
