| Summary: | Research shows that engaged survey respondents may provide higher-quality data. The technological capabilities of Internet surveys offer multiple opportunities for researchers to use digital media to personally engage respondents. The author of this case study identified one way in which digital media could be used to engage Internet survey respondents: embedding Internet memes with motivational messages within the survey. This case study overviews a field experiment used to test the effects of Internet memes on respondents' data quality and survey engagement. In this case, the author describes multiple considerations for the design of the memes, methodological choices for the sample and research design, and the development of multiple dependent measures to assess effects of the memes. In the closing, the author shares her reflections on how the design choices played out, general lessons learned, and what she would do differently in the future. Readers will understand the process of designing survey instruments with memes and explain the kind of research situations which might benefit from their use as an engagement device. |
