| Summary: | Geographic information systems (GIS) are structured platforms that enable the acquisition, storage, management, analysis, and visualization of spatial data. Based on specific software and dedicated tools, GIS offers numerous possibilities to integrate and analyse different data, including social aspects, and are used to explore and interpret spatial relationships and patterns. The social sciences and humanities have increasingly incorporated GIS into their research, focusing on areas such as socioenvironmental vulnerabilities, estimation of income and welfare transportation, health care, land use, and land cover evolution. Along with this text, we call attention to the recognition of GIS as a provider of multiple possibilities and intersections of quantitative and qualitative languages. This guide provides a summary of the main characteristics and uses of GIS and the integration of social aspects through spatial data analysis, individually and in combination with environmental data. Based on a widely used open-source platform, QGIS, the characteristics of spatial data and examples of the tools available for spatial operations are provided. Starting with a brief overview of such platforms, this guide then describes the attributes of spatial data represented in GIS and exemplifies how to integrate social data. Afterwards, it presents different tools to analyse social patterns and explore how these associate with environmental conditions. Finally, the advantages and limitations of open-source GIS are briefly discussed. This guide helps the readers with a technical understanding of How to use GIS for social data analysis with illustrative examples of available tools in a freely accessible software. |
