Description
Summary:In this guide, readers will learn about the benefits and challenges associated with mobile phone data collection in persons experiencing homelessness (PEH). We discuss different options for data collection that mobile phones provide and unique aspects of mobile phone research with PEH. Special considerations for sampling and recruitment are discussed, for example, the challenges of representative samples in a population that generally lacks a fixed mailing address and the benefits of working with partner organizations trusted by PEH. In-person recruitment and training on the use of the mobile phone and/or the app are time-intensive, but they make essential contributions to building trust with the participant population; this is likely to reduce the amount of missing data and improve data quality in general. We discuss the role of incentives and consider different modalities for this, from completely automated to the use of gift or credit card. In the section on survey design, we recommend more frequent, but briefer, surveys. Readers are encouraged to publish methodological papers reporting on their own experiences with mobile data collection with PEH.
