| Summary: | Ethnomethodology and conversation analysis (EMCA) offer a distinctive set of methods for analyzing human social practice. EMCA reveals how practices work and how they are intrinsically organized by capturing and examining their real-time unfolding. EMCA methods can be adapted to any kind of human social practice, including those situated in the digital world. EMCA studies have examined interactions through digital technologies, such as text-based or avatar-based interaction between humans, as well as user interactions directly with digital technologies, such as web search engines or voice assistants. Regardless of the setting of human digital practices, EMCA can be used if the details of how those practices unfold in real-time can be captured. This may be done through mechanical recording, open-ended interviewing, or self-observation. EMCA involves demonstrating the intrinsic orderliness of particular instances of action, as well as inducing patterns across instances through collections of similar cases. |
