| Summary: | Social media offers immense opportunities for academics who want to build and expand their professional networks. Unfortunately, the widespread perception of networking as an instrumental and self-serving activity means online networking is often approached narrowly in terms of self-promotion. The problem with this view is that it misses the most important aspect of online networking for academics: extending the range of potential collaborators with whom you might work. If we approach networking through this lens, then we are engaged in a much more enjoyable and important activity, revolving around the things we might make together with people who share our intellectual interests and professional concerns. This requires an understanding of the digital platforms which can be used for online networking, as well as the particular strengths and weaknesses associated with each of them. In fact, this creative and collaborative approach to networking is actually the most effective way to use social media platforms as an academic. In the process, it can generate new challenges, but these can be negotiated through a reflective awareness of your intentions and needs as a scholar. |
