Description
Summary:This study sought to examine informed consent practices in off-label transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment. Utilizing Qualtrics survey software and attempting in-person participant recruitment at an international meeting of a professional organization, researchers were forced to change initial plans for online survey collection via flyers only, to the inclusion of QR codes in material and in-person recruitment due to multiple factors including the inability to access listservs, struggles with perceived legitimacy, and participant difficulty accessing survey links through printed web addresses on flyers. After data collection, researchers identified a process to identify duplicate entries in Qualtrics data to determine whether data collection was complete and analysis could proceed. The combined effects of recruitment struggles coupled with data duplication resulted in the failure to collect enough responses to analyze collected data with confidence. Researchers discuss problems encountered in this failed study and discuss ways to avoid similar pitfalls in online research, including benefits of obtaining official sponsorship, utilizing commonly understood technology, planning for additional data collection, and duplicate entries.
