Summary:	Online data sources provide a wealth of information for social science researchers. However, there are also significant challenges that should be considered and possibly addressed to ensure quality research. In this case study, we discuss how online data sources allowed us to evaluate whether Republican control of government negatively affects the environment. We encountered some significant data challenges in this project, including how to best measure our concepts of interest. We discuss the steps we took to address the issues we faced, plus provide ideas to help other researchers handle or avoid similar challenges when using online data sources.
