Description
Summary:In the early weeks of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, there was little media coverage of its impact on UK care homes. When care home deaths began to be added to the daily reports in April 2020, it became apparent that something unprecedented was happening in these environments. It is now known that almost half of all deaths recorded during the first wave of the pandemic were care home residents (Office for National Statistics, 2021). At the same time, under government restrictions, care homes had to close their doors to visitors of any kind, including researchers. This meant that in order to gain any kind of research insight into what was happening behind these closed doors, alternative methods had to be found. Between July and November 2020, we, therefore, carried out an online research study to explore the experiences of care home staff during the first wave of the pandemic. Our particular focus was on the impact of caring for people with dementia, who make up at least 70% of the UK care home population. The project had three phases in total, the second of which was a photovoice study in which we received 52 photographic images that participants had taken to symbolize their experiences of the pandemic and how they coped with it. Below, we discuss some of the ethical and methodological challenges and lessons arising from using photovoice as part of this study.
