Description
Summary:This national, cross-sectional qualitative study used existential phenomenology to explore the lived experiences, particularly regarding disease management and health outcomes, of adult diabetic patients, who were aged 18 or over, resided in large urban areas of the United States across its five geographic regions, and received diabetes-related medical care. Choosing this personally connected and professionally relevant research topic helped the researcher remain focused and motivated, get through challenges, and achieve the research objectives. Research methods chosen for the study also aligned with the researcher's specific research aims and were appropriate for answering the two research questions. Data collection was completely online, using a self-developed survey instrument comprising 11 questions in two sections: eight demographic questions in Section 1 and three open-ended questions in Section 2. A purposeful sampling method was used, resulting in a final sample size of 112 spread across three groups: web-based Group 1, email-based Group 2, and interview-based Group 3. Data analyses included using an online transcription service, Verbal Ink®, to transcribe virtual interviews' audio files to text files, using readily available Microsoft Excel to create pivot tables for analyzing demographic data, and using a free trial version of MAXQDA for analyzing qualitative textual data. The researcher was flexible and pivoted to completely online data collection approaches when circumstances evolved. When using its transcription services, the researcher learned about Verbal Inks' nuances in pricing and communication. Practicing self-care, information-seeking, self-development, and networking enabled the researcher to complete her dissertation successfully and timely in the midst of a global pandemic.
