Description
Summary:To publish their work in scientific journals, scholars need to acknowledge that the research on which they publish was ethically approved, and consequently, the sources of harm that participants and researchers were likely to be exposed to were known and potentially avoided. Presenting a research project to an ethics committee for approval is an arduous task for even skilled researchers. This is often experienced as a dilemma, as researchers need to choose between committing to the approved protocols, on one hand, and having easy access to the data, on the other hand. Although protocols embrace researchers and ethics committees' views on how studies should be designed and conducted at high ethical standards, most of these do not include participants' views on the process. There is still a lack of participant involvement in the consideration of research ethics. Indeed, little attention has been paid to the views of research participants on their role in and experience of research. Very often, protocols lack post-study evaluations that would provide insights into participants' experiences with the research. This case describes how research participants perceived participation in a project that was ethically approved. This has implications for the ethical requirement of voluntariness in informed consent. Aspects of the process that they felt made their participation rewarding or difficult will be described, as well as my personal notes during different stages of the project to understand the transformative agency of doing sensitive research.
