| Summary: | This dataset example introduces Pearsons chi-squared test for independence. It is often referred to using the symbol 2. Pearsons chi-squared test allows researchers to test whether the distributions of two categorical variables are independent of each other or not. In this way, the technique builds directly on cross-tabulation. Many other statistical tests of independence exist, but Pearsons chi-squared test is one of the most frequently used among them. This example describes Pearsons chi-squared test, discusses the assumptions underlying it, and shows how to compute and interpret it. This example uses a subset of data from the Pew Research Centers Project for Excellence in Journalism News Coverage Index for 2012. Specifically, we test whether the formats for news stories most frequently used by network and cable TV news programs differ from each other. Understanding the potential relationship between the format of news stories and where they are aired can help researchers understand market strategies for TV news shows and how viewers might experience news reports based on whether they watch network or cable news programs. The sample dataset used for this example has been cleaned and organized to make this example easier to follow. Interested readers should read the full documentation for the dataset before using it for research (http://www.journalism.org/datasets/2012-news-coverage-index-data-set/).Direct Prerequisites: Cross-tabulation. |
