Description
Summary:We traveled to India with a group of educators who were implementing an English second language acquisition program in an Indian orphanage. Phonological awareness, an early marker of literacy, improved in a second language after participation in the program. We discuss the experimental design, logistics of coordinating international research with our collaborators and the orphanage director, following a schedule that set the study to be completed in 2 weeks, and the ethics of ensuring that both the experimental group and control group received the same second-language learning experience. Knowing what aspects of second language acquisition improve during short-term interventions can help educators to target literacy education programs designed for work in regions with limited resources and access to schooling.
