Summary:This example describes what summative scales are and why we would want to use them. It shows how to create a scale from a set of survey variables and how to assess its reliability using a standard measure, known as Cronbach's Alpha. An illustration of the method is presented using data from the 2004 General Social Survey (GSS). Specifically, we construct a scale to measure empathy.
