| Summary: | This case study demonstrates how qualitative research was conducted in two separate but similar studies in Kuwait. The first study was focused on analyzing environmental narratives within religious and governmental institutions in Kuwait, while the other was focused on developing a constructivist grounded theory about environmental citizenship. Constructivist grounded theory is a branch of the grounded theory methodology that was developed by Kathy Charmaz. It focuses on the co-construction of meaning involving both the researcher and participants. Using qualitative methods in the Narrative Policy Framework for the first study and grounded theory for the second introduced the authors to similar and unique challenges in navigating the different stages of the research. This case study illustrates the challenges associated with finding rich data that could be used in qualitative research. Challenges were also significant in the sampling stage, where creating simple random samples did not align with the objectives of the projects. This case details how creating purposeful samples was necessary to be able to generate the necessary data to answer the research questions. Data collection was done using semi-structured interviews with unique interviewing techniques that spoke to the social complexities of Kuwait. Gender and religious differences played a key role in the interview process. Every stage of the interview process had to be done carefully to reflect the true meanings of what transpired in the interviews. Finally, the data analysis phase required the generation of grounded theory due to the absence of prior theoretical explanations for what emerged from the coding process. |
