| Summary: | Social constructionists are those least willing to forsake the promise of the social sciences and, therefore, most dedicated to extending their reach into knowledge domains wherein they have hitherto been discounted. However, while few would dispute the claim that social constructionism has usually in some sense been concerned with the sociology of knowledge, there is a wide range of opinion as to what "knowledge" ought to mean in this context. Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann (1967), for example, intended their classic text The Social Construction of Reality as a contribution to the sociology of knowledge, but the knowledge they sought to analyse was, following Alfred Schutz, the common sense knowledge of lay members of society rather than philosophically or scientifically validated knowledge.
