| Summary: | Oral history refers to both a form of biographical data collection and to the analytic product of those collected data. As a form of data collection, it uses interviews (and the attendant audio files, video files, and transcribed interviews) to activate historical accounts of individuals and information regarding events, eras, or daily life. Interviewees are selected based on their participation or observation of past events; their narrative accounts are preserved in aural form for historians and future generations. Oral history privileges the direct account of individuals--including their perhaps idiosyncratic perspectives and textured narratives--and what can be gleaned from their retelling that cannot be located in extant written sources. As a product, an oral history can refer to an archive or to a book based on such archived, aural data. The dataset files are accompanied by a Teaching Guide and a Student Guide. |
