Summary:Simulation in the social sciences comes in different guises, from gaming simulationrole-playing games in which, for instance, students play the roles of high-ranked diplomatsto agent-based simulation, whereby pieces of software play the role of human actors. The purposes of all these simulation approaches differ widelyfrom the formalization of verbal theories and mental models designed to make these theories and models unambiguously communicable to approaches aimed at the prediction of the future path of a complex system. Simulation is also used for didactic and training purposes, offering students (or also politicians) a close look at complex systems and the processes ongoing therein, and allowing them to interfere with the modelled systems and processes without the risk of damaging a real social system.
