Description
Summary:Individuals are increasingly sharing their own identity and health narratives on social media, providing an opportunity for social scientists and health researchers to seek out unique forms of data and consider new lines of inquiry. However, this new development opens up considerations of how to ethically engage with social media data collection and how to analyze such data effectively and efficiently. This case study provides details on a study of posts from the social media platform Instagram to gain insight into the lived experience of people with the chronic illness fibromyalgia and how open-ended questionnaires were utilized to gain further understanding of the benefits users derived from using this online platform. Social media content was analyzed via content and semiotic analyses, and the case study provides a detailed summary of this process for potential future research to consider.
