Randomization is an effective method for balancing confounding factors between treatment groups and can eliminate the influence of confounding variables. Here, we share the results of my research work titled, "Effects of an easy listening music intervention on satisfaction, anxiety, and pain in patients undergoing colonoscopy: a pilot randomized controlled trial." In this randomized controlled trial, easy listening music was played through earphones to patients before and during a colonoscopy, and the volume was controlled by the patients. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of an easy listening music intervention on satisfaction, anxiety, pain, sedative and analgesic medication requirements, and physiological parameters in Chinese adult patients undergoing a colonoscopy in Hong Kong. In this case study paper, background information on colonoscopies, the clinical setting, and the development of the intervention are discussed briefly. This is followed by an explanation and discussion of what we took into consideration when designing our randomized controlled trial. Reducing the risk of bias in our randomized controlled trial was our greatest challenge. The sharing of our experience provides some insight into effective strategies for designing a good trial, which comprises randomization, the calculation of a relevant sample size, blinding, a clear intervention protocol with an appropriate method of evaluation, and measures for minimizing bias.
