Summary:	Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional bowel disorder that can have a major impact on quality of life for those affected. This condition affects more women than men, and with few clinical markers for IBS, the psychological and social experiences of IBS patients have been largely ignored by the medical community. This case describes a clinical nursing research project that involved four separate studies about IBS from a gender perspective starting from the patient standpoint. It employed both qualitative and quantitative methodologies to inform the data, using medical records as well as interviews and questionnaires to ascertain patients' experiences with IBS and its impact on their day-to-day lives. Ultimately, I strove to bring a voice in these studies to those that have too often been ignored or dismissed by traditional approaches to medical studies and patient care.
